Plum, loam, leather and mineral flavors are framed by a hint of vanilla in this gentle expression of Brunello, which is balanced and focused on the finish, where refined tannins linger. Best from 2026 through 2042. 1,082 cases made, 300 cases imported. Bruce Sanderson

Located in the area of Tavernelle, near’s Gaja’s Pieve Santa Restituta estate, Máté was established by husband-and-wife team author Ferenc and painter Candace in the mid-1990s. High density plantings of various clones yield a richly fruited, concentrated Brunello that absords its oak overcoat with ease. Coffee, vanilla and mint lend a sweet glossiness to red cherry. Racy acidity keeps it vibrant. The tannins are mature and well-formed giving frame to this stylishly rendered picture.

JAMES SUCKLING/  93 pts

Walnuts, sweet berries, lemons, lavender and chocolate on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins. Fragrant floral and spice notes on a firm finish. A little tight for now. From organically grown grapes. Better from 2024.

VINOUS /  92 pts

A  smoky mix of crushed strawberry and cherry is accentuated by minty herbs as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. It splashes across the palate with ripe wild berry fruits and hints of tropical citrus motivated by vibrant acidity. The 2018 tapers off with an exotic flourish of spices and florals, as subtle tannins frame this Brunello quite well. While lightly structured, this highly expressive interpretation of the vintage is already quite tempting, yet still in need of a few years of cellaring. Drinking window 2025-2032

JANCIS ROBINSON /  17++ pts

Deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and conveying a sense of richness, but otherwise still closed on the nose. Just a suggestion of Moroccan leather. Sappy, lively and tangy fruit on the palate with an undertow of oak. Long, mouth-filling, juicy and hedonistic. Can be approached now. (WS)

2017

JANCIS ROBINSON/  17 pts

Just mid ruby. Closed and savoury and perhaps a little reductive, but with brooding intensity underneath. Ripe, juicy cherry fruit on the palate and long, beautifully integrated tannins. A delicious mouthful of juicy fruit. (WS) – Drink 2022-2030

FALSTAFF /  93 pts

Brilliant ruby red with a sparkling core. On the nose – a beautiful scent of ripe raspberries and ripe strawberries, delicate precious wood, vanilla sugar and milk chocolate. The palate’s creamy glaze shows hearty red berries, compact and harmonious, with well-integrated acidity and delicate, smooth tannins on the finish. – OK

ROBERT PARKER /  92 pts

The focus here is on freshness and lightness, and the wine is redolent of varietal aromas that range from wild rose to tart cherry. There are hints of oak, with some sweet spice and smoke. Overall, I’m loving this new look for Máté – ML

WINE SPECTATOR /  93 pts

Lively and elegant for the vintage, revealing strawberry, cherry, rose and mineral aromas and flavors. Turns leaner and more focused as it plays out on the long, fruity aftertaste. Offers plenty of structure, so it should develop beautifully. Best from 2024 through 2040. – B.S.

JAMES SUCKLING/  93 pts

A floral and fresh red with cherry and berry character and some floral undertones. Lavender and sandalwood too. It’s medium-bodied with a firmness and freshness. Pretty. Clean. From organically grown grapes. Better in a year or two.

WINES CRITIC /  93 pts

Very luminous in the glass showing notes of prunes, cherries, lemon rind and linden flowers. A lot of energy in the background with hints of green tea leaves and wild thyme. Full bodied, extremely refined tannins well integrated in the matrix and a precise, essential finale. Really well made. Better from 2022.

DECANTER /  91 pts

Surrounded by Mediterranean brush and caressed by sea breezes, Máté’s seven hectares sit between 320 and 410 metres in the Tavernelle zone. This Brunello is aged in a combination of 500 and 4,000-Litre French oak barrels. There’s a toasty overlay to the 2017 along with aromas of cherry, wild strawberry and mint. The glossy fruit is enfolded in sleek tannins with concentrated pointy acidity giving some drama, finishing on a salted liquorice note. Drinking window: 2023-2028

VINOUS / 90

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino takes some time to blow off its youthfully reductive state, as sugar-dusted black cherries and savory herbs emerge from an air of white pepper and crushed stone. This is remarkably juicy and lifted in character, matched by a vibrant wave of red berries that coasts along the palate with ease, giving way to inner rose and hints of licorice. A coating of fine tannins lingers, nicely balanced by a bump of residual acidity that maintains freshness. The 2017 should only require a minimal cellaring to show its best, though it may benefit from a decanting to help its aromatics blossom.

Healthy mid ruby. Rich cherry nose with hints of gingerbread but much more complex than this sounds. Concentrated marasca cherry with energetic acidity and persistent powdery tannins. Has lots of everyting. Energetic, electric and fruit-driven finish with an elegant palate weight. Tactile fireworks.

Ash, cherry and violet aromas follow through to a medium to full body, with a tight palate of firm, silky tannins. Chewy at the finish.

FALSTAFF / 93 pts

Noble and shiny ruby red colour. Very appealing on the nose with ripe forest berries, raspberries and light cherry, supported by cedar wood and a hint of hazelnut. Balanced and juicy on the palate, covering the tongue with an elegant body that’s polished, clear and long. – OK

VINOUS / 92

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino displays rosy florals and bright strawberry complemented by sweet autumnal spice. There are depths of silky textures giving way to polished red/black fruits, with an attractive inner sweetness contrasted by saline-minerals and peppery herbs. Its tannins are round, creating a subtly structured feel through the licorice-tinged finale.

FORBES – TOM HYLAND / Outstanding (Four and a half-stars)

Rich aromas of morel cherry, currant and hibiscus. Medium-full with excellent concentration. Impressive ripeness and depth of fruit, lively acidity, balanced medium-weight tannins, notable persistence. Excellent varietal character and overall harmony. Some past vintages of this wine have been a bit strong on the wood notes, but not in this 2015, which is neatifully balanced. Give a year or two to round out; peak in 12-15 years.

Located in the Santa Restituta area, Máté is just a stone’s throw from Gaja’s Montalcino property. It is owned by a Canadian couple – artist Candace Máté and author Ferenc Máté. At the moment, the 2015 is still wound up in the influence of wood, needing time to unfold. Cherry bark, cola and clove make way for heather nuances. The palate is compact and concentrated, with layers and layers of sweet, supple tannins, but a radiant juiciness shines through. A deftly-constructed polished wine.

“CAMPO ALTO 2009” – TOM HYLAND / 4 stars

Husband and wife Ferenc and Candace Máté have been quietly producing some very fine examples of Brunello di Montalcino at their lovely estate near that of Gianfranco Soldera and Angelo Gaja for the past several years. This 2009 “Campo Alto” is a new bottling and for my thoughts, the best wine they have produced to date. Displaying rich aromas of morel cherry, tar, Damson plum and a hint of coffee, this is medium-full with a rich mid-palate. It certainly is flavorful with very good varietal focus and the persistence is more pronounced in this wine as compared with previous efforts from this producer. Best in 12-15 years. Excellent (4 stars).

Vibrant violet color with a deep ruby core. The wonderful aromatics leap from the glass. There’s a large frame of crushed red fruits supported by comfortable broken-in leather, sweet pipe tobacco, and flowers. On the palate the wine displays impressive concentration with a monstrous core of rich, ripe berry fruit, tobacco and savory Tuscan herbs. This is so delicious. Wonderful balance, and although only moderately tannic, the acids create a lively, mouth watering sensation. This is great wine. — JF

A raw note of spice and tobacco give this Brunello a brawny, masculine personality. Cherry cola, licorice, savory spice, smoked bacon and black currant hint at the many years of cellar aging that have shaped the evolution. Those flavors also add to the overall finesse and silkiness of the finish. — ML

TOM HYLAND/ 4 stars

Pale young garnet; dried morel cherry, paprika and thyme aromas. Medium-full with very good concentration. Generous mid-palate; lengthy finish with notable persistence. Very good acidity, refined tannins and subtle spice notes in the finish. I have liked this producer’s previous examples of Brunello, but this is a step up, as there is a more developed mid-palate and the wine overall is a more complete example; I applaud the style and quality of this 2008. Best in 12-15 years – perhaps longer.

KYLE PHILLIPS’S / 2 stars (highest score) Italian Wine Review

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with smoky cedary notes mingled with some hardwod ash and tart berry fruit and citric acidity. On the palate it’s bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by tart berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth and flow into a clean sour cherry finish. Pleasant, and will already drink nicely with succulent red meats, though it also has the capacity to age nicely for a numer of years.

Montalcino, 7 Máté hectares for an “elegantissimo” Brunello – Luciano Di Lello A stunning location is what the Canadian writer, Ferenc Máté (in the photo) chose for his refuge, where the Montalcino countryside fades to the west, in a backdrop of hills that hide the sea in the distance. But another beauty of the area is that it is the place of an exceptional wine, with a microclimate, altitude and soil components that allow it to express something admirable in the 7 hectares of vines which surround this antique home. His Brunello is a cameo of subtlety with aromic, elegant nuances and a modern, distinct balance with the best results of this outstanding harvest. Surprising is the Syrah Banditone ‘06—unfortunately rare in numbers of bottles produced—a great red wine, wonderfully opulent and superb, with a precious sweet fruitiness, vivid and sensual, that will only get better, the longer it ages in bottle.
